What it is
ScaleUpStream is a platform where startups, investors, small businesses, incubators and institutions each get a page and interact: investors publish questionnaires and score startup submissions, incubators run cohorts, experts sell webinars, sessions, programs and services, and an admin CMS runs the whole thing.
The backend is Bamep Inc.'s own product, a NestJS service on PostgreSQL. I worked on it as a backend engineer at Bamep.
System overview
- Two API trees from one codebase, application and admin, each with its own OpenAPI document.
- PostgreSQL through Sequelize with global soft delete, reusable query scopes and transactions around writes that touch several tables.
- Domain events raised in process and handled by listeners; queues for reminders, nudges and investor updates, processed by a separate worker with delayed, deduplicated jobs.
- Email and password sign-in plus Google and LinkedIn OAuth; admin roles enforced by guards and page membership checks.
- Health checks, structured logs with request ids, a global exception filter and a response envelope with pagination metadata.
Engineering
Payments with Stripe
Customers, payment intents, setup intents, subscriptions with promotion codes and the billing portal; metered usage recorded in the same transaction as the local record; Connect onboarding for sellers; webhooks for payment, setup and subscription events.
Weighted scoring engine
Investor questionnaires mix multiple choice, numeric range and open questions with balanced weights. Submissions receive a grade from configurable thresholds, and every score keeps a record of how it was computed.
Events on Zoom
Server-side OAuth with token refresh and retry; meetings are created, attendees registered and hosts assigned inside a transaction, then released again by a scheduled job.
Operational tooling
An admin view over queued jobs by status, transactional email from templates with calendar invites, and presigned uploads to S3 with duplicate detection.
Testing and delivery
- GitHub Actions deploys develop, staging and production to Heroku as web and worker processes.
- ESLint and Prettier with a shared configuration; OpenAPI documentation for both API surfaces.
